Ubuntu CDs
A few days I go I received Ubuntu Linux CDs from the Ubuntu ShipIt program, I ordered them back when Ubuntu version 6.06 (Dapper Drake) was released (1st of June), they took a bit longer that expected and the package was obviously opened at the customs, perhaps because of the recent events in the region, anyway they arrived, and I need them badly for my laptop, as the current Gentoo Linux installation is quite outdated and updating it will take a considerable effort.
Perhaps the first thing I'd install after the distro itself is Xgl, it's a 3D desktop environment, I tried a demo live CD and the results were fascinating on both visual and productive fronts, Xgl provides some really cool visual effects such as dropdown shadows and translucent windows, it also features an improved multi-desktop model with many enhancements to common features such as alt-tab functionality.
Although I'm going to install Ubuntu on my laptop, I'll remain a loyal Gentoo user on my workstation.
By the way, those who live in Syria and are interested in Ubuntu but can't find any CDs, please let me know and I'll try to provide copies.

I think you will enjoy it. it is by far the most smooth installation of linux I came across. I did advice it to quite a few people and those who installed it as their first linux are really happy! Unfortunatly, using it in a cisco vpn networking environment is quite troublesome and can frustrate even the advanced users. Aside from this, everything seems great.
I havent have the time to install XGL, and when i tried to play with Kororaa live cd, it just went offline. I hope you have some time to post images from your experience with XGL.
On a different note, congratulations on your engagement :)

Thanks! And yes, I'll definitely report back once I have Xgl up and running.

I don't know too much about Linux. Why 3 CDs?
And btw I'm not insane, I'm just downloading 700 mb using dialup connection :)
Ayman | Hi abosen, I'm glad to hear | Fri, 2006/08/18 - 3:08pm
Hi abosen,
I'm glad to hear about your enthusiasm towards Linux, to answer your questions, the photo contains 3 CDs because they are for 3 different systems, PC, Mac, and 64-bit PC, you will most likely need the first one only.
If you want, I can give you a copy of the CD, where are you located in Syria? Please email me your address and I'll send a copy.
